A Brief History of SOUTH PACIFIC

South Pacific was originally adapted from two short stories written by James Michener. The two love stories were combined by Rodgers and Hammerstein to create their musical. The show opened at the Majestic Theater on Broadway on April 7, 1949, and ran for 1,925 performances, the second longest run of any show that decade.  It became only the second musical of that time to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for drama.  It was revived in 1967 at the Lincoln Center, after being made into a classic film in 1958.
